LIFE
After my nighttime sojourn on Henry Street, it was fascinating to read a most interesting out-of-body testimonial in the autobiography Life, by Keith Richards, guitarist for the Rolling Stones. Mr. Richards described his out-of-body experience during a car accident. At the time, his girlfriend, who was seven months pregnant with his first son, was in the passenger seat when a hydraulic fault in the car caused it to roll over three times, then into a hedge. At this point, Richards recounted, “My body left the car, I watched it all happen from twelve to fifteen feet above. Believe me, you can leave your body,” Richards explained. “I’d been trying all my life, but this was the first real experience of it. I watched that thing roll over in slow motion three times, very dispassionate, very cool about it. I was an observer. No emotion involved.” Richards wondered if his girlfriend was also watching from above, and suddenly, after the car stopped rolling, he found himself back behind the steering wheel of the car.
What an extraordinary experience this must have been for Mr. Richards, and he lived to tell his story! In reading this book it is obvious that spirituality is woven throughout this artist’s life. Richards explained that the inspiration for his songs emanate from the heart, yet songs must be written down right away or they will be lost. Mr. Richards explains that “great songs write themselves, you’re just the conveyor, the skill is not to interfere with it too much, ignore intelligence, ignore everything; just follow where it takes you. You really have no say in it, and suddenly there it is.” It is not surprising that Keith Richards is decidedly antitechnology; he says that “everyone has been led by the nose and gotten carried away with it.” However, he feels that people are slowly swimming away from technology because it does not compare to feeling life, the enthusiasm and spirit of the Soul, and feeling is everything. Simply stated, what we are really cultivating is how to be a medium in life for a greater power and reality. This will harmonize our goals and bring us into right relationship through the process of cultivating self-mastery.
